Auckland Castle and the Mining Art Museum
A coach trip from York to Bishop Auckland for a visit to the Auckland Project starting with a tour of Auckland Castle, formerly the residence of the Bishops of Durham. It has been described as Britain’s finest bishop’s palace. The castle’s many treasures include the celebrated series of the 13 life-sized portraits of Jacob and his twelve sons by Francesco de Zurbaran (1598- 1664) which were purchased for the castle by Bishop Trevor in 1756 and saved from sale and dispersal by the philanthropist Jonathan Ruffer in 2013. After a self- funded lunch, we will visit the astonishing Mining Art Museum. Estimated return time to York 6pm.
