Gallery Talk: Artwork of the Month June 2022
8 June @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
William Etty: This talk will be given in the Gallery on Wednesday 8 June at 1pm by Dorothy Nott, former Chair of the Friends
York’s William Etty is one of those artists who are both praised and condemned for the very same thing – in his case, for his ‘penchant for fleshiness!’ He was probably (together with Turner) the artist who divided opinion most passionately in the first part of the 19th century. In relation to his painting ‘Male Nude with Arms Upstretched’ Dorothy will explore some of the reasons for his controversial reputation.
