Gallery Talk: Artwork of the Month, May 2022
11 May @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Our next Artwork of the Month talk is ‘The Slade and Bloomsbury‘. It will be given by Eliza Goodpasture, a postgraduate student of Prof. Liz Prettejohn’s at the University of York.
The talk will be given within the Bloomsbury Exhibition in the Art Gallery on Wednesday May 11th, 1 – 2pm. Friends will be able to enter without pre-booking, but those of us who have not booked to remain in the Exhibition will need to depart from it as soon as the talk is over.
Eliza’s introduces her subject: The Slade and Bloomsbury The Slade School of Art, founded in London in 1874, was a uniquely impactful institution in the world of British art around the turn of the twentieth century. The networks of artists fostered by the school and its progressive methods of teaching inaugurated a new age of British Modernism. Vanessa Bell briefly attended the Slade, and her desire to continue to encourage communal work and innovative artistic practices led to her founding of the exhibiting body she called the Friday Club, whose members included many Slade graduates. In my talk, I’ll discuss the background and idiosyncrasies of the Slade and some of the lesser known graduates who exhibited with the Friday Club, focusing most on Edna Clarke Hall, the often forgotten “star of her generation,” whose striking self-portrait is on view in the Gallery.
