Gallery talk – Artwork of the Month

12 January @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Our New Year January 2022 Artwork of the Month talk will be given by Helena Cox¬† in the Gallery at 10 am on Wednesday January 12th. Helena has just been appointed the Art Curator at the University of York. Her subject will be a painting by Walter Greaves, Japanese Figures on Chelsea Embankment, which is on display in the Upper North Gallery. Greaves was a close friend and assistant of James McNeil Whistler, and was greatly influenced by him. Helena describes this painting as ‘a treasure trove of some of the signature features of Japonism.’ She notes that the Chelsea Embankment ‘features on many of the iconic works by Whistler and is almost synonymous with the artist’s nocturnal style.’ She will ‘explore why this location was so important, why Japanese art had such an impact on artists all over Europe in the 1870s, and why Greaves’s art deserves to be admired in its own right, and not merely as a variant of Whistler’s signature style.’

Friends will be able to enter the Gallery without pre-booking, but please remember to bring your membership card. Seats and audio loop will be available. We will be expected to depart promptly by 11 am. Those wishing to stay on will need to have previously booked to do so.
