Gallery talk: Stanley Spencer
12 February @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm
A talk on Stanley Spencer by Lauren Marohn, recipient of the MA bursary part-funded by the Friends.
Lauren has provided this introduction: In my talk on 12 February, I will introduce and analyze Stanley Spencer’s The Deposition and the Rolling Away of the Stone. I will pay particular attention to Spencer’s chosen religious subject matter and situate such themes in the broader art historical context. My talk will shed light on Spencer’s distinct artistic career by examining his perspective on historical and contemporary religious paintings, his devotion to his hometown of Cookham, and his distinctly modern style of painting.
Friends’ Artwork of the Month talks are free and booking is not required, but members are reminded to bring their membership card for entrance to the Gallery.
