SUMMARY:Artwork of the Month: Engagement Ring by Cornelia Parker
DESCRIPTION:Engagement Ring Drawing (as long as it lasts)\, Cornelia Parker (2002) \nCornelia Parker is probably best known for her large scale installations such as the exploded shed (Cold Dark Matter) and her crushed silver objects repurposed as Thirty Pieces of Silver. Her work is about destruction\, resurrection and reconfiguration but not always on a grand scale. More recently she has turned to the smaller\, quieter and more subliminal and York Art Gallery is fortunate to have acquired this piece through the Contemporary Art Society. This talk will look at how Parker makes interventions in everyday objects\, and while making conceptual art accessible\, challenges the viewer not only to rethink the original object but also the world around us.

SUMMARY:Trip to Thorns Art Gallery at Semerwater
DESCRIPTION:Thorns Gallery\n \n \n \n \n \n Leaving Memorial Gardens at 9 am we will travel by minibus to Thorns Gallery\, arriving at about 11 am in time for tea/coffee and biscuits. This is a rare opportunity to visit this contemporary art gallery opened in 2025 in a beautifully converted cattle shed overlooking Semerwater\, near Leyburn\, where Jake Attree is holding an exciting solo exhibition. Friends may know Jake through visits to his studio in Dean Clough and his paintings of the Minster in York Art Gallery. In an exhibition catalogue for Messum’s in Cork Street\, London\, his work was described as ‘somewhere between the epic and the folkloric: the high impasto surfaces of his panoramic studies centred on York Minster and his earlier homage to Breughel show an eye for the infinite\, enduring details of his ancient city’ and\, I would add\, elsewhere. The gallery owners\, Graeme Black and Jonathan Reed will join with Jake to meet us to discuss their project and Jake’s new exhibition. There will then be time to wander through the gallery and\, depending on the weather\, enjoy a little of the peaceful countryside. Please bring a packed lunch as there are facilities for eating both inside and outdoors. We aim to be back in York for 5pm. Owing to narrow roads around Semerwater\, we are limited to a minibus and hence spaces\, so early booking is advised. \nCost: £40. To include minibus transport\, coffee and exhibition. If paying by cheque\, please contact the organiser. \n \n Book tickets

DESCRIPTION:‘Wedgwood and Flaxman: A Creative Alliance’\, a talk by The Honourable Sir Tristram Hunt\, FRHistS\, Director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.\n \n \n \n \n \n This lecture in the Tempest Anderson Hall\, Yorkshire Museum\, has been organised in connection with the exhibition on John Flaxman and his influence held to mark the bicentenary of his death\, which will run from Friday 18 September 2026 to Sunday 17 January 2027 at York Art Gallery. This is the third exhibition\, in association with the Department of History of Art at the University of York\, celebrating York-born artists; the first two showcased the work of William Etty (1787-1849) and Albert Moore (1841-1893). Flaxman\, sculptor and designer (1755-1826)\, was throughout Europe by far the most celebrated of these artists in his own day\, and remained the best-known British sculptor until Henry Moore. He was praised by the literary superstar of the age Goethe\, influenced major European artists including Ingres\, Turner\, and Goya\, and was a key figure in the pan-European artistic movement of the day\, Neoclassicism. \nFlaxman worked as a designer and modeller for Josiah Wedgwood\, who rated him above all his other designers\, and with Wedgwood’s financial support spent seven years in Rome from 1787\, where his sculptures were also much admired. In 1800 he was elected a full academician at the Royal Academy\, and in 1810 a special post was created for him there as Professor of Sculpture. The exhibition will allow a long-overdue re-evaluation of this highly important figure. This lecture explores his creative partnership with the great potter and Enlightenment figure\, Josiah Wedgwood. \nTwo sorts of ticket are available: \n\nLecture in the Tempest Anderson Hall only @ £15\nLecture in the Tempest Anderson Hall plus drinks reception 5.00-6.00 pm to be held in honour of Sir Tristram Hunt\, at the CoCA Gallery\, York Art Gallery\,  @ £25.\n\n \n Tickets for lecture only £15\n \n Tickets for lecture + reception £25
