SUMMARY:Walking tour: Art and Architecture in Beverley
DESCRIPTION:We will start our tour at 11am in the medieval Guildhall\, with its fine 18th century courtroom\, local history museum\, and collection of paintings by the Beverley artists Fred and Mary Elwell. The Guildhall was remodelled in the 17th and 18th centuries and the Court Room has fine plasterwork by Guiseppe Cortese. Here we will have an introduction by the Curator. Then after time for a self-funded lunch\, we will visit the Art Gallery at 1 30pm where the Curator will give a short talk on the Collection and we will tour the permanent collection and view the travelling exhibition on the work of Georgia O’Keefe. We will finish at St Mary’s Church\, where we will have a guided tour and privileged access to the Priests Room with its fascinating collection of Church treasures. The size and decoration of St Mary’s reflect the wealth of the merchants of Beverley who helped rebuild it after the collapse of the Central Tower. \nCost £18: to cover fees and donations \nThis event is fully booked. Click the button below to join the waiting list. \n \n Click here to join the waiting list

SUMMARY:Artwork of the Month: Engagement Ring by Cornelia Parker
DESCRIPTION:Engagement Ring Drawing (as long as it lasts)\, Cornelia Parker (2002) \nCornelia Parker is probably best known for her large scale installations such as the exploded shed (Cold Dark Matter) and her crushed silver objects repurposed as Thirty Pieces of Silver. Her work is about destruction\, resurrection and reconfiguration but not always on a grand scale. More recently she has turned to the smaller\, quieter and more subliminal and York Art Gallery is fortunate to have acquired this piece through the Contemporary Art Society. This talk will look at how Parker makes interventions in everyday objects\, and while making conceptual art accessible\, challenges the viewer not only to rethink the original object but also the world around us.

SUMMARY:Artwork of the Month: Saint Agnes by Cavallino
DESCRIPTION:Stillness and Strength: Cavallino’s Saint Agatha\n \n \n \n \n \n				 Our programme of Gallery Talks will resume on Wednesday 11 March at 11.30 with a talk on Cavallino’s Saint Agatha from Maisie McDonough\, one of the Gallery’s Duty Managers. \nJoin us for a closer look at Bernardo Cavallino’s Saint Agatha\, a painting whose power comes from stillness rather than spectacle. This talk explores how Cavallino captures resilience\, dignity\, and inner strength in the face of suffering\, and how his gentle approach contrasts with more dramatic depictions of the same saint. Along the way\, we’ll consider why Saint Agatha has continued to inspire artists and viewers for centuries. A chance to slow down\, look closely\, and discover the quiet intensity of this remarkable work. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bernardo Cavallino (1616-1654/1656)\, Saint Agatha\, 1635-1645\, oil on canvas\, 64.1cm x 50.8cm. York Art Gallery\, YORAG : 853. Image credit: York Museums Trust

SUMMARY:Talk by Sir Gabriele Finaldi\, Director\, National Gallery London
DESCRIPTION:Sir Gabriele Finaldi will give a talk ‘The National Gallery: A Growing Collection’\, followed by a conversation with Professor Charles Martindale\, Chair of the Friends\, about his career and role as Director of one of the greatest galleries in the world. \nThe National Gallery has been much in the news recently. On May 10 2024 it became 200 years old\, and the bicentenary celebrations continued into 2025\, including the National Treasures exhibitions across the country (York receiving Monet’s The Water-Lily Pond). Its redisplay of the entire collection was received with great enthusiasm by art critics and public alike. The Sainsbury Wing entrance has now been remodelled as the Gallery’s principal entrance\, and a new Members House has been designed. More recently it has won very substantial funds for further exciting capital developments\, including space for 20th-century art and a research centre. And all this at a time of massive financial challenges in the cultural sector as a whole. \nSir Gabriele has been the principal architect of these successes. His doctoral thesis at the Courtauld was on the Spanish baroque artist Ribera. In 2002 he was appointed Deputy Director for Collections and Research at the Prado in Madrid\, and he has a special association with Spanish art (including Velázquez\, Zurbarán\, Murillo\, Sorolla\, Picasso). As a curator he has taken the lead in numerous exhibitions in the UK\, Spain\, Italy\, and Belgium. He was appointed Director of the National Gallery in 2015\, and knighted in 2025 for services to art and culture. \nThis is a rare opportunity to hear this major art-world figure. \nOrganisers: Moira Fulton (mfulton58@gmail.com); Charles Martindale \n \n Book here
