Who was Giulio Cesare Procaccini? Why does his small-scale Annunciation in York Art Gallery deserve our special attention? Amanda Hilliam, art historian and Friends’ committee member, will explore the technique, function and significance of this work by the Milanese Baroque painter. Striking for its expressive brushwork and vibrant palette, the newly-displayed Annunciation distills the dynamism and emotion of Procaccini’s large-scale public altarpieces into a compact form for private devotion.
