Artwork of the Month – May 2025

14 May @ 11:30 am - 12:00 pm

*** Please note that this event starts at 11:30 ***

The subject of the next Gallery talk, to be given by Peter Gibbard, is Balthazar*, also known as the Black African King, who is depicted in a 16th century panel from a triptych of Flemish origin, The Adoration of the Magi. The panel is currently on display in the ‘Treasures from the Stores’ exhibition (North Gallery).

Peter has sent this note about his talk: ‘Topics will include a brief history of Balthazar in visual art; the origin of this Magi in artistic representation, and then I’ll highlight some of the detail from this panel which may, with further research, help us to identify the artist source. Lastly, I will summarize how the popularity of this religious theme contributed to the development of commercial trading in art as we know it today. This panel is an excellent example of the Mannerist style popular at that time. It was gifted to the Gallery in 2024 by a Friend, and conservation and framing was funded by the Friends. I do hope that you will agree that Balthazar is a valuable addition to York’s permanent collection.’
