Our speaker, Alison Gilchrist, is an accredited stained-glass conservator at Barley Studio, York. In late 2025 the Barley Studio were honoured to work on this very special memorial window from St Lawrence’s Church, York. Designed by the Arts and Crafts artist, Joan Fulleylove, the window commemorates Thomas Ableson Harpley, sometime Vicar of the Church, and his son Robert, who was killed in the Battle of The Somme, July 1916. In this lecture Alison will describe the life of the window, through close examination of the techniques used in its execution, the various repair interventions made since, and the recent restoration.
