Artwork of the Month talk

8 May @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

This month’s Gallery talk will be given by Amelie Castellant, a postgraduate student at the Department of History of Art, University of York, on Wednesday 8 May at 1pm. The title, which sounds intriguing, is ‘Seeing Scuptures and Touching Pictures’.

Why do we enjoy touching sculptures, such as Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Portrait Bust of Alfred Wolmark and Harold Gosney, Reverie 2015? Since the Renaissance, artists have argued about the superiority of sculpture or painting, the first being the medium of “touch” and the second the art of the “optical”. This talk will bring to light the perceptual differences between the “materiality” of painting in the gallery and the sculptures.

Members are reminded that entry charges have been re-introduced at the Gallery so do remember to bring your membership card and take advantage of free entry for the Friends.
