Artwork of the Month gallery talk

10 April @ 1:00 pm - 1:30 pm

Our next Gallery talk will be held on Wednesday April 10th when Jeanne Nuechterlien will be comparing Peter Collingwood’s Hanging M.84 No.23 with George Gower’s portrait of Mary Denton. This sounds intriguing as one is a modern textile artwork and the other a sixteenth-century oil painting.

We will begin in the central CoCA gallery in front of Peter Collingwood’s Hanging: M.84 No.23, 1984, one of the geometric woven textiles of his own invention that he called ‘Macrogauzes’. We will then move a short distance to George Gower’s portrait Mary Denton, 1573, which uses oil paint to represent elaborately patterned embroidered clothing. Comparing these two very different artworks encourages us to reflect on how we see patterns in three-dimensional space.

Members are reminded that entry charges have been re-introduced at the Gallery so do remember to bring your membership card and take advantage of free entry for the Friends.
